I think I would have come away with a different impression of kabuki theatre if I hadn't seen a show with costumes designed by Yoshitaka Amano, starring Bando Tamasaburo and Ichikawa Ebizo (both of whom Google identifies as the definite dream cast). There were sparkles and capes and dragons and Shiny Things (TM). And heels.

So many little things made it from Kabuki into Takarazuka as well. The hand gestures, the steps, even the fawning manner of the female-players. Someone should write a thesis on this.

(For the record, the show was Kaijin Besso, The Sea God's Villa.)

And before, there was Taka-An, and a CD by my girl that was never officially released, recorded in 1991 during her nibante days. I now have a recording of Maki Ichiro singing Memory ♥

Cirque du Soleil Corteo = wonderful. And may have a follow-up.

We only showed up for toujitsuken at 10, but we got B seats at a steal of a price :) BaraAme - not as confusing as people make it out to be. Tani impressed me with her fire, and Micchan's hair was messily adorable, but Tomu stole the show for me. She needs to do more comedy ♥

And then there was the revue, in which Ume-chan rocked the house. You have to respect a musumeyaku who can dance with a stage-ful of otokoyaku and pwn every single one of them. (Also, was Tomu speaking in sign language while singing? It looked that way.)

Also, Takarazuka-An is very dangerous for fans of OGs. I am now the proud owner of an autographed photo of my girl

Next is Tuesday. Tanz der Vampire. With a guy I've been starry-eyed about for over four years.

This is a good trip :D

In Hiroshima right now, and after ten days of sun (and a major tan) in Kansai, we're finally getting to see the rainy season. Not that it's a bad thing: Miyajima in the rain, with mist covering the mountain tops, was very spectacular.

Tomorrow, we drive through Nagoya to catch Cirque du Soleil, then on to Tokyo. Thursday will be another Takarazuka first - standing in line at silly o' clock for same-day tickets ^^; Keeping my fingers crossed that we do get them.

It's halfway over already, eleven nights down and ten to go. I have a feeling I will be coming back, often.

Flea markets are dangerous, just so you know. I'm now the owner of a rather overpriced yukata that I fell in love with ~_~ At least it's really good quality.

I also did an unashamedly fannish thing and got up at crazy o' clock to go Shinsengumi hunting. The actual headquarters/museum are only available for viewing by appointment (in Japanese), but I found the Mibu temple and the building itself. There was a pair of Japanese tourists there and we exchanged furtive looks as we bought the maps of old Kyoto.

Now, to see Rainbow Bridge :>

Off to, literally, other side of the world. Back in 3 weeks (July 10). Will, hopefully, check in intermittently throughout, but can't promise anything.

Fwee.

In 8 days, I'll be on a plane to Japan. It's only just starting to hit home.

The postcard offer is still open (though actual postcard sending may be from Poland, since the last few days of our trip will be particularly hectic). Thus far I know we're meeting [livejournal.com profile] mayoini in Osaka, a friend from secondary school in Nagoya, and [livejournal.com profile] utena1409 in Tokyo. Some other people may come out of the woodwork, and since [livejournal.com profile] ladyoz is taking her laptop, we should be mail- and LJ-capable for meeting arrangement purposes :)

Now, to sit on someone before we end up seeing not only her, her and him, but also her, her and her... ;)

Between work and fever, this is, alas, almost two weeks late. Rest assured that my memories are quite vivid :)

Tanz der Vampire, on crack edition )

In conclusion: if you're putting on a musical, add Hungarians. They make everything better :D

Just a quick note to let people know I survived Oberhausen, albeit with a damnable cold. In point form:
  • Cologne and Düsseldorf are both pretty. And wet.

  • The Roman-German museum in Cologne remains as amazing as ever.

  • According to the guy in the theatre box office, Jan Ammann broke his leg.

  • However, Kevin Tarte was not in good form on the Hamburg proshot. Now, he is. The difference is dramatic.

  • I got to make him snicker onstage and got a picture with him at stagedoor.

  • The Oberhausen run of Tanz der Vampire just got extended to January. And it's worth it.
Now, not to fall over at work. It's going to be a challenge.

And with everything and vampires, I forgot to mention that I won't be around this weekend :) Tomorrow afternoon I'm heading to Oberhausen via Düsseldorf, seeing the requisite dancing vampires, and coming back on Monday around noon-ish. No mail access due to mobile roaming fees.

We've had over a month of full-on, beautiful snow this year, more than usual - it's more common to have sleet or hard clumps of grey ice littering the streets, depending on whether it's too warm or too cold for fluffy snow. I took shameless advantage of it with my camera.

The first batch of photos is from Kiermusy again, the pine forest near the village.

Four more photos from the forest near Kiermusy )

And these are from a recent walk in the Lasek Bielanski park.

Back from Vienna, alive. I had an immensely enjoyable weekend, including seeing Rebecca again (more on which, hopefully, later) and [livejournal.com profile] fyrie killing my feet with all the walking we did ;)

One of the highlights of the trip was the temporary exhibition on Crown Prince Rudolf that's currently on at the Hofmobiliendepot. He was a deeply disturbed individual. One quote: "I have a deep respect for death. I often seek out dying people, to witness their last breath. Each of them dies differently. I watch dying animals as well..."

But what slayed me was a pair of photos of Rudolf clinging - there is no other word - on the arm of Wilhelm II of Prussia. Who, before the unfortunate moustache, apparently was a dead ringer for Jesper Tyden. And of all the Rudolf photos in the exhibit, the one with his arm through Wilhelm's was the only one in which he looked comfortable. On top of Wilhelm's documented predilections, I really do not need this plotbunny.

[livejournal.com profile] fyrie has already abandoned me. This is probably a good time to note that I'll be absent as well, Thursday evening to Monday morning, so should anyone require me online, now's the time to say something :)

Am safely ensconced in Edinburgh in [livejournal.com profile] fyrie's custody :) Needless to say, online presence will be scarce until Tuesday, and inexistent between Tuesday noon-ish and the morning of the next Monday (lakes! finally!).

Now, shopping :D
winter: (elisabeth - necrophilia)
Life has interfered with blogging, alas. On the upside, I'm off tomorrow evening for three days in pretty, pretty Budapest, with pretty, pretty musicals to watch. And a certain blond Hungarian to try and kidnap ;)

I'm taking the train this time, night trips both ways, and between that and the fact it's Budapest, I've about as much nerves as with a trip to the seaside that I take every summer. Sure, I don't speak the language, but no-one expects me to speak it, and the city's so nice. I have my favourite bakery, my favourite pancake place, and among my plans are stocking up on a Hungarian hand cream and spices. It's not a strange city anymore.

And once I'm back, expect more squee about musicals :)
winter: (elisabeth - beauty)
I saw two shows in Berlin, May 1 and May 2. The cast was almost the same - the only exception was Sophie, with the understudy the first time and Christa Wettstein (first cast) on Friday. The shows, however, were dramatically different, mostly because on Thursday, Bruno Grassini (Lucheni) was phoning in his role, while by Friday he had recovered.

Detailed review )

End verdict: I'm glad I've gone, for reasons of Uwe (and to a lesser extent, Annemieke and Oliver), but this production is craft rather than art. And I'm very happy I have tickets booked to Elisabeth in Budapest next month, with the full second cast (Máté, Bernádett and Nikolett, Ádám Bálint and Tamás Szaraz) confirmed for both shows I'm attending.
winter: (rebel - devil wept)
Got back yesterday near midnight and was so exhausted I fell into bed without even touching the computer. Reviews will be up tonight or tomorrow. In the meantime, highlights of my Berlin trip:

- seeing Uwe Kröger, twice. No Pia, but oh, UWE. No more watching certain Hungarians for you, the set'll fall apart!
- Spargel - height of the season, and oh, they were delicious
- lovely Roman-inspired sandals and a jacket that cost far too much
- stuffed alligator O.o
winter: (Rising Stars - Fear of Flying)
Two weeks ago, I had no plans for the summer at all. Now it turns out I'll be out of the country two, possibly three times between May and June:

- May 1-3 in Berlin (Shopping and Elisabeth. Mostly shopping.)

- May 23-26 in Edinburgh ([livejournal.com profile] fyrie's birthday party and uh, more shopping?)

- Tentatively, June 21-25 in Budapest. Again. For the same purposes as last time.

Since the only other plans I have are for Vienna in the autumn, I need to find some new countries to travel to. Spain, possibly? Or Mallorca, I adored [livejournal.com profile] selenak's photos of her trip there.

It's alive!
