Winter is beautiful

We've had over a month of full-on, beautiful snow this year, more than usual - it's more common to have sleet or hard clumps of grey ice littering the streets, depending on whether it's too warm or too cold for fluffy snow. I took shameless advantage of it with my camera.

The first batch of photos is from Kiermusy again, the pine forest near the village.








And these are from a recent walk in the Lasek Bielanski park.

Beautiful... ours is all gone but it lasted over a week, which is unheard of these days.

It's been a good snowy winter :) I just regret I couldn't go skiing. Apparently it's been the best skiing weather in the Carpathians for years.

Oh gorgeous! I like the snowy mallards too. Duck, duck, duck.

Your fir trees are a different shape. It's very strange. We have lots of fir trees too, but it must be a different species. These are more skinny.

These aren't firs, they're pines :) Take a look at the full-size photos - they're laden with snow, which bends the branches down and gives them a fir-like shape. Firs are only to be found in the very south of Poland, mostly in the mountains.

AH! That's what's so strange. I'm used to the pines, but they're further south than here, where there's rarely snow.

In Europe the entire northern forests, from Poland to Siberia, are pine and spruce. Firs are southern trees over here :)

Oh, those pictures are beautifully stark and majestic. And the ducks are lovely as well.

The ducks were singularly amusing :) The whole pond was frozen over apart from a small channel by the edges, and they chased each other through it, while others, like the ones pictured, climbed the steep edge to get a better takeoff platform for their flight to the next pond over.

I've had about enough of winter here... I've always lived in northern areas with lots of snow, but now I'm living a bit more south in the "freeze line" area, which apparently equals lots of ice and slush all winter. I'll take two feet of snow over half an inch of ice any day...

That sounds like our typical recent winter - that, and the two weeks where you have a foot of snow that melts slightly and freezes into a hard shell you slip on. Fluffy snow is much more appealing :)
