A very happy birthday to both [livejournal.com profile] artela and [livejournal.com profile] moustachios :)

In other news, my e-mail works again, and I am going to vivisect my hosting company on a medieval examining table if they pull off one more stunt like that.

I also have nearly 5,000 words of a Coldfire fic for some reason. Woe is me.

Meme from [livejournal.com profile] dyoklako:

List five (5) books that you have read and liked. List another five (5) that you plan/will to read. Then list five (5) more that you have read and didn't like and another five (5) you do not plan to read at all. cut and paste the instructions and your own list on your lj/blog.

Literaryness yay )

Meh-day

3K words before I left for the day, and still no sign of a plot. Conflicting information about when my exam is. And now, my domain and e-mail are both down, since AH managed to hang the entire server well enough that they're restoring everything from backups, so if you sent me e-mail in the last twelve hours or so, you might want to resend it tomorrow.

Since I'm in a whiny mood already, a meme ganked from [livejournal.com profile] sleepykelvina: Livejournal Pet Peeves:

While I'm not very happy with LJ right now for keeping us in the dark, there was an [livejournal.com profile] lj_dev post that seems to be deleted now. It explains the problem (limited to Mozilla and Firefox, for once) and what LJ exactly did to do away with it.

Here's the explanation of what happened to LJ.

Here's hoping they'll fix that stylesheet security hole in the next edition of Firefox. Offhand, I can see how even after that fix it can be used to cause wank and drama by forging comments.

Or, you can bind your login cookie to your IP address. Unless you're on a bloody dynamic IP like I am :/

For my own memory: I need to make a backup of my LJs with ljArchive.

My bloody e-mail's down again.

I'm leaving this host as soon as my account runs out. In the meantime, please refer to

tevildo AT gmail.com

if you have anything urgent to tell me.

Working now, after prodding the livechat thingie. I'm still leaving them :/

After a year, I finally updated my fic site. It looks like it hasn't been such a bad year after all - I managed to scribble over 30 fics of various shapes and sizes.

Sleepy sickness is going on strong. Urgh. Back to work on Monday, too.

Okay, so I'm checking out the friendslist, and the ShinyShiny feed is linking to other cool stuff in its sister blogs. Clicking on one of those links provides a slew of pop-up windows. Yelp, Ctrl+Alt+Del, Task Manager, frantic mouse action, whimper.

Then blink.

I call up Task Manager again. It's missing all its upper part - the title bar, the menu, and the tabs to switch to Processes view.

Cue almost two hours of panic, frantic virus and adware scanning, being too scared to call up Internet Explorer to google the thing, and generally biting my fingernails clean off.

And then when I finally remember that hello, I also have the ancient Netscape 4.7 that I use for mail, what is the first Google result for "task manager menu missing"?

Task Manager tiny footprint mode.

I knew my hair should have been re-dyed two weeks ago ~_~

In NaNo-News, Chapter 2 is up, with a lot of backstory and exposition. Coming up: Kirill-chapter, and then possibly a letter from Arthur to his friend in Europe to introduce the political landscape before the Big Vampire Council. Hoping to hit 10K later tonight.

I should probably make this a sticky on top of my LJ, but I can't be arsed to make up a nice banner right now.

Right now more people have me friended than LJ is deigning to show me. And I don't check that list that often.

So a word of note: this journal is semi-friendslocked. Everything creative, linkage, fandom meta etc is public. Personal blather, things about works in progress and random ravings are locked - mostly to avoid googlability. So despite the scarcity of public posts, I usually post once a day, sometimes twice.

If you friended me, and you want to see the friendslocked posts too, comment. Tell me something about yourself. Don't be a stranger ^_^

AAAAARGH!!!

The DNS service for my site (extenuation.net) is down. This DOES it - I'm looking for a new host as soon as I have the time, because since AH got taken over, if it's not one thing, it's another. Also, until further notice, use this address if you need to reach me by e-mail - I'm not receiving LJ comments by mail, either:

tevildoATgmail.com

Okay, it's back up. But I'm SO switching. Argh.

Today's Mary-of-the-Herbs, but also the Polish Army Day, so there was a grand parade and ceremony, with the President and all that jazz. And a drill demonstration among other things. While the soldiers drilled, which always reminds me of Broadway-style dancing, the marching band played a medley of soldierly songs. First Brigade to Poppies of Monte Cassino to Warsaw Song to- Wait a minute.

The Imperial March. By the Polish Army marching band. During a national fete, on national television.

^_^

In other news, yes, I'm back. My mail program's on the fritz, so mail-answering might be short. And tomorrow I need to go back to work :/

I've checked my friending-status, and it seems that several people have friended me without telling me, and I have no idea who they are.

So, people. If you friended me and I didn't friend back, here's your chance to speak up and tell me whether you want me to. Mind you, it'll mean you get to read my rambling on work and cats and 1001 reasons for not writing.

Come on. Tell me something about yourselves.

Speak up!

I just turned on Trilian for the second time this year - apart from a few minutes mid-June, I haven't had it on since December. I had to update to 3.1, too. I'm not sure I like the new layout.

This is just by way of a reminder. As you see above, I don't have a chat client turned on by default when I'm online. I have AIM, MSN and Yahoo - I'm bethsakurazuka, renfriATastercity.net and Beth_Winter respectively. I'm usually home and online by 7PM on weekdays, until 10-11PM with interruptions, all Central European Time (Greenwich+1). If you want to talk to me, the safest way is to e-mail or comment on LJ telling me to turn on a chat client.

Threats work, too.

Oh, and I just swiped another DVD from someone. Mmm, Qui-Gon Jinn :D
winter: (angstwing)
Bloody hell.

Some bastard is using random-generated @extenuation.net addresses for a spam attack. Ergo, I'm flooded with "delivery failure" bounces etc. I've put filters into motion, so if you want to contact me, don't use "undelivered", "mail system error" and similar phrases in your e-mail subject field. I'm doing my best, but I might miss legitimate e-mails and LJ comments, so if it's urgent, there's always tevildo at gmail.com.

EDIT: Okay, that does it. I blocked everything that does not come for bwinter, bethwinter, or disc at extenuation.net. Argh.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ladylalaith, I now have an address where you can send me really large files :)

All insinuations that [livejournal.com profile] catprince owns my soul are clearly unfounded.

Apparently LJ thinks everyone in Poland is a hacker, since it blocked both my home and college IPs as part of preventing the hacker attack. Now I'm back.

And I ♥ [livejournal.com profile] littleshebear. Copied from her, because this needs spreading around:

For those of you who were decidedly unimpressed by the new "quick reply" feature (and I know there's quite a few of you) you can turn it off via the command console.

Click the link above, then put:

set disable_quickreply 1

into the text box and press "execute." If you want to re-enable it at any time, simply go back to the command console and this time put in, set disable_quickreply 0.

Yahoo blocked Trillian again

This means that until CeruleanStudios settles this (and I do hope they do), you can reach me on Y!M only by arrangement, since I'll have to specially go and initiate the web client. AIM's bethsakurazuka, MSN renfri@astercity.net, ICQ 162248916, and e-mail's in my userinfo.

[ETA] For the time being there's a quick fix, but Yahoo's supposed to be changing it again and again. Better use another messaging service just to be sure :/

[ETA2] Quickfix disabled. Also, MSN's wonky. Can people please just use good ol' AIM?
winter: (Default)
Yeah, 12 months of paid time. I'm too braindead to wrestle LJ into submission as far as the layout is concerned, so just icons so far.

Sometimes, I seriously love my male parental unit. He ended up buying a new router today, because sending the old one to repair it would have taken three weeks and "you're going to be insufferable until you get your net back anyway". It's a wonderful thing to have someone in the household as net-addicted as you are ^__^

So, virtual drinks on me. And I'm really sorry for scaring y'all. If it helps, I was seething all day...
winter: (Default)
Router's fried.

This means, in the worst case, that all the onine time I'll get through the next month will be through Dad's computer. Mail yes, livejournal checking probably too. Roleplaying might be problematic >_<

Wah! Want my net back!

Yay!

Domain back up. Mail is once again bwinter @extenuation.net.

In honour of that event:

Butterflies!
winter: (Agent Sands. Death Incarnate.)
Me: (paraphrased) Give me back my domain or I'll sic Feanor on you. With Sands' mini-Uzi.

Them: "I have contacted the registry and your domain name should start to resolve within 12-24 hours."

Verdict? 24 hours ultimatum. Then I'm getting the spellbook. There's this neat incantation for summoning demons... I do know he took Feanaro as his "true" self-chosen name...

Other news: OUATIM and X to be posted as soon as I've a valid address to direct feedback to. Currently plotting Silmarillion detatched-multi-part on the lines of "Back in the Fold" or the "Virtual Future" x-series, with an original POV character (everyman type, not Mary Sue) and some gratuitous MaeFin in the second story.

ETA: And of course LOTR/Silm Singer By The Shore will be going up on ff.net too :) I'm really happy about the feedback on it so far.
