Virtual housekeeping
Feb. 14th, 2006 06:47 pmA very happy birthday to both
artela and
moustachios :)
In other news, my e-mail works again, and I am going to vivisect my hosting company on a medieval examining table if they pull off one more stunt like that.
I also have nearly 5,000 words of a Coldfire fic for some reason. Woe is me.

List five (5) books that you have read and liked. List another five (5) that you plan/will to read. Then list five (5) more that you have read and didn't like and another five (5) you do not plan to read at all. cut and paste the instructions and your own list on your lj/blog.
Read and liked, recently:
1) C.S. Friedman, the Coldfire trilogy (Black Sun Rising, When True Night Falls, Crown of Shadows)
2) Elizabeth Kostova, The Historian
3) Anna Kańtoch, The Devil on the Tower
4) Georgette Heyer, Sylvester (shut up!)
5) C.S. Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia
Planning to read:
1) Goscinny and Sempé, The New Adventures of Little Nicholas
2) Frances Wilson, The Courtesan's Revenge
3) Friedrich Nietzsche, Thus Spake Zarathustra
4) J. Sheridan LeFanu, Carmilla
5) Terry Pratchett, Wintersmith
Read and didn't like, recently:
1) Georgette Heyer, Cousin Kate
2) Susan Fromberg Schaeffer, The Snow Fox
3) Arthur Golden, Memoirs of a Geisha
4) Terry Pratchett, A Hat Full of Sky (second attempt, still blah)
5) Philip K. Dick and Roger Zelazny, Deus Irae
Do not plan to read at all:
1) Anything about Anita Blake after Narcissus in Chains
2) Any Star Wars Extended Universe book, ever
3) Anything by Hemingway. Read two, enough to tell I hate it
4) Any new Nora Roberts. Plot rehash deja-vu
5) Prince of Tennis, in any shape or form

In defence of the Extended Universe...
Date: 2006-02-14 10:24 am (UTC)And in Traitor, we get an update on the Taoism of the force... it brings evidence for an EU character, OTHER THAN ANAKIN, as bringing balance to the force.
Re: In defence of the Extended Universe...
Date: 2006-02-14 10:28 am (UTC)My main reason for not reading EU is that it would eat me alive and I'd feel obliged to follow it as canon. SW's one of the fandoms where I don't even read much fic, because so few people have concepts that coincide with mine...
Makes sense.
Date: 2006-02-14 10:31 am (UTC)As a plot idea... what if Yoda DID go after Anakin, and Obi-Wan after the emporer... what would happen next, do you think? If Yoda never faced the Emporer, or did not do so in the Senate, what would have happened next?
Might he have attempted to "Retrain" Anakin? Particularly if he did so BEFORE Anakin choked Padme, thus killing her?
Re: Makes sense.
Date: 2006-02-15 12:54 am (UTC)eh?
Date: 2006-02-14 10:04 pm (UTC)4) J. Sheridan LeFanu, Carmilla
---- im surprised you haven't read LeFanu's Carmilla! it's good. though i must admit it is hard to find works written by him. i must warn you though that this book is what bram stoker patterned his Dracula novel from. though LeFanu's Carmilla is way more devious than Dracula.
Do not plan to read at all:

---- eh> why? though i had to admit that the anime was crack, the manga is even more enjoyable. still, whatever you prefer. *shrugs*

Re: eh?
Date: 2006-02-14 10:16 pm (UTC)Prince of Tennis is a long story - suffice it to say I've been saying that since it first came out. Too many brains on my f-list were eaten by it and I'm not going to share that sorry fate :> I'm irrational about things like that, same reason I'm boycotting the johari/nohari memes.
Re: eh?
Date: 2006-02-15 02:14 am (UTC)Carmilla - enjoy reading the book. it IS good! she is really a nice character study.
