winter: (tea ceremony)
I finally got through Eliot Pattison's latest novel; I bought it three weeks ago, but with work and movies and HBP, I didn't have the time to sit quietly for five hours and read it in one take as it deserves to be read. It's as beautiful as Skull Mantra, Water Touching Stone and Bone Mountain. It's just - so quiet, so precise, so touching. Tragic and lovely and uplifting. "Chinese ex-cop camp survivor solves crimes in Tibet" doesn't even begin to describe it.

And if you never read any of the novels, no fear. A batwinged Tibetan bunny is gnawing at my fingers, waiting only until I persuade Xiao Shan that yes, he has to go up that snowy mountain, because the strange foreigners can help him find a killer. At least I don't have to worry about him commenting on the ninja gear, because he'll chalk it up to more Tibetan weirdness.

And that story will probably have the dubious honor of being the first Shan Tao Yun fanfic ever written. Um, at least he's not part of the slash pairing?

I think I'd better go and barricade the door against Tibetan vengeance gods :S

I don't think I've pimped the Tax-verse in over a year, so now's as good an opportunity as any. POTC reincarnation in the modern world, with the pirates being IRS agents. And the newest installment has a delightful Sands in it:

"Kicked out of the house at gunpoint so he can have sex. That's number twenty-seven on the list of ways to tell Cousin Sheldon's in town."

Jack/Will, Elizabeth/Norrington, Sands/El. [livejournal.com profile] the_mad_fangirl - run, don't walk.

In other news, I can't believe I've yet to find any Batman Begins Ducard/Bruce slash. If this continues I might just have to write some, because damn did I see chemistry.

Le sigh

winter: (farewell remorse)
Egypt now :( Quite apart from the tragedy (and it's ironic that it gets less billing than London, despite the similar scale), I'm also thinking about more mundane things. Like the fact that last year, the female parental unit finally stopped making "but they blow people up!" noises whenever I mentioned going to see the pyramids. I'm sorely tempted to use my internship money and take advantage of the fact it's going to be cheaper this winter. Not letting the bastards grind us down, and all that.

Current events in general are making me want to write bleak stories that no-one will read.

Now, to movies. Between the V for Vendetta trailer, which looks hopeful, the fact they moved the Polish Mr & Mrs Smith premiere up to August 5th, and the fact that I'm going to the pre-screening of Batman Begins today (boo-yah!) they cheer me up a bit ^^

Oooh. I can combine the two and read V for Vendetta on the tube today. And then write V-fic, possibly set in a future where the bad nuclear things only happened to Britain, so that the rest of the world history could proceed without many alterations. Right.

First of all,

Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] pinkdormouse!

Second, Star Wars fanfiction is eating way too much of my life. I don't even like Dooku. Now, someone get him out of my head?

Third, that X-wank at [livejournal.com profile] togakushishrine? Just one question about it: who died and made whoever the fandom police? Not to mention declaring X is serious and "has always been like that, and listen to me because I've got all old fans friended". And you've never heard of X-Therapy? Hell, I should point the parties involved to my X fanfiction page. Between Chibification, The Case of the Missing Shinken and Club Regina, it should make certain parties' heads implode >:D

PS. I know, tagged on the music meme from [livejournal.com profile] lthegib, but I'm still thinking about what to post :P My music tastes lately range from plebeian to showtunes.

From [livejournal.com profile] reynardine:

If you happen to be working on some creative writing project, fanfiction or what have you, post exactly one sentence from each of your current work(s) in progress in your journal. It should probably be your favourite or most intriguing sentence so far, but what you choose is entirely your discretion. Mention the title (and genre) if you like, but don't mention anything else -- this is merely to whet the general appetite for your forthcoming work(s).

Folk tales would have it that the soul took three days to leave, and then the dead could come back as a vampire, a shadow of its human self.
- Quintile (Five of Pentacles), Van Helsing set of drabbles

She was the one who woke when nightmares took them, the one who lit the candles and told them the Phantom could not possibly be there.
- Au Clair de Lune, Phantom of the Opera post-movie tragedy of manners

What kind of person sculpted the face of his unwilling love and dressed it for a wedding?
- unnamed (possibly Madness of Senses), Phantom of the Opera action comedy

So sad and wild, with strange pride and recklessness, someone singing in the cold and revelling in the tragedy.
- When I Leave It Will Be Darker, Phantom of the Opera/Van Helsing crossover vignette

By the way, When I Leave... and the first chapter of Madness of Senses are written out in longhand in my notebook. If I don't post them by tomorrow morning, feel free to kick me to type faster.

Current [livejournal.com profile] deadmentalking muses are [livejournal.com profile] byzantinequeen, [livejournal.com profile] jagiello and [livejournal.com profile] poet_rambo. I think it gives me a wide range of possibilities, between the reformed sinner made empress, the not-so-barbarian warlord and the snooty and perverted artiste <3
I won't be taking any more simply because there's no-one else who'd be both interesting to others and easy to play for me. Michael Hutchence tempted me for a moment, but he was something of a neurotic with destructive taste in women, so it'd just be an excuse to post pretty pictures of him ;)
winter: (give me coffee)
Is it me, or is today especially sleepy? I feel like I'm walking through a dream-mist, with weights at my wrists and ankles. My thoughts swirl lazily, never touching the edges of my mind. I can't even read.

In the past forty-eight hours I've seen Boondock Saints twice. It's a figurative, almost legend-like movie that manages to also be terribly funny (much, much Willem Dafoe love) and features a cast of very evocative characters. Story ideas flicker through my mind, from a crossover with OUATIM (Connor: "Whoa, those guys are fucking psychos." Sands: "Look who's talking.") to a character study of Connor and Murphy crossreferenced to Neil Gaiman's Remiel and Duma, guardians of heaven become guardians of hell. I might order the US dvd, since the Polish one doesn't have any extra features :/

My Great Phantom Mix playlist has over four hours of mp3s now - full Original London Cast, full movie OST and assorted versions of Phantom of the Opera. It helps a lot with the writing, which is going well and less Anne Rice-y. I was recently ambushed by another Phantom plotbunny, which is shaping up to be an action comedy with serial killers and Johnny Depp (NOT as Sands). Add in polyamory and it sounds like something that [livejournal.com profile] guede_mazaka would probably write much better. My subconscious will clearly do anything to give Phantom a happy ending ~_~

Off to the vet's now, so the rambling ends. Oh, and happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] ithilwen :)

Life continues to kick me. But I have other problems, too.

Opening line of current oeuvre:

"Paris was grey. The stones glistened in the rain like the bones of old gods, and chimney-smoke soiled the last survivors of the snowfields that had briefly bleached the city's face only weeks before. Water dripping from the edge of a roof to a balcony below rang out a funeral march."

I need to find a hammer and knock my new muse on the head ~_~ Erik, I know you're down and out and everything, but could you please try not to make me write like Anne bloody Rice?

EDIT

New version:

"Paris was grey. The stones glistened in the rain like frosted glass, and chimney-smoke soiled the last survivors of the snowfields that had briefly bleached the city only weeks before. Water dripping from the edge of a roof to a balcony below rang out a solo in three-eight time. Her companion was prone to translating everything into opera."

That's better. A bit.

A snippet of something I wrote today:

He leaned towards her. "He killed his sister. Family blood, Lyta."

And then she remembered. Remembered the scars on his face.

"They should have kept your lips sewn shut, Lie-smith."

Her hands felt heavy. The claws of brass dug into the surface of the table as she flexed her fingers.

It would help if I knew where both Lyta and Loki are now in DC continuity >.< I'm hunting for a TPB of Mike Carey's "Furies", but so far I only found the hardback for over 30 euro, and last I heard Loki had something nasty happen to him in "Lucifer" a few years ago.

I'm in a Vertigo mood lately. And possibly a crossover one. There are also tarot cards shuffling somewhere in the back of my mind. Weirdness approaching, possibly.

And still, bells ringing.

First of all, in the immortal words of Garfield, FEED ME. There are people on my friendslist who read and write Van Helsing fiction of the Dracula/Gabriel genre. Please, some recs? I'm starving here!

In other news, I don't think I mentioned it here except in a custom-locked post. I'm doing Nano this year, too.

ExpandWhy, what, when )

ExpandAnd an excerpt from Dragon Town )

*looks at friendslist* I keep feeling I forgot something. Oh, right. If you're a US citizen, go do me a favour and kick Bush out of the White House. Or there'll be no living with [livejournal.com profile] uberbitsch :P

Yes, you heard me. I'm doing request drabbles.

No particular occasion except needing to get over my stress-induced burnout.

Fandoms available:
Anime/Manga - X, Get Backers, Death Note, Gundam Wing, Hellsing, Kenshin, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, Vampire Princess Miyu (first 3 volumes of manga only), Yami no Matsuei (anime only), Slayers (TV only)
Western deadtree products - LOTR and Silmarillion, Harry Potter, anything Batman-related, Sandman, Hellblazer, X-men and related, Fionavar Tapestry, Discworld, any Neil Gaiman book, any William Gibson book, Zelazny's Amber Chronicles, Artemis Fowl
Live action - OUATIM, POTC, Angel, Equilibrium, most Bond movies, Matrix, Moulin Rouge, Underworld, Shrek, Troy, Smallville season 1, Star Wars, Star Trek: Deep Space 9

There should be something in this for everyone. Rules?

Maximum two requests per person. Give me a fandom, a character and optionally a focus - an object, an emotion, a location. You know - "Colonel Mustard, in the library, with a lead pipe". No pairings.

No deadline either: I'll work my way through them. And they'll be the length I manage to drag them out to ;)

Now, somebody give me something to write? *bats eyelashes*

I saw King Arthur. With M. Which is beyond lovely, because we just snarked over the whole movie.

Also? I'm writing KA fanfic. WITH M. You may now start running in fear. Deal is, he does plotty-plotty, period and military detail, I fill in the gaps and dialogue.

...I wonder if he'll allow me to draw the third side of the triangle :D
winter: (Default)
Can anyone tell me this: when you're talking Spanish, and address someone as "Señor", would you capitalize the S in the middle of a sentence?

Because I'm missing like three lines from the next OUATIM thingie.

In other news, spent yesterday with the delightful and often whacked people from pl.rec.fantastyka.starwars. I managed to cunningly take control of the photos, so I'll be the one putting them up later - readers of this journal will have a chance to compare me with straight hair from Thursday's party to my mass-of-curls hairstyle from yesterday. And on top of that, I stole a couple of trade paperbacks from V that are just... gah. JMS's "Rising Stars". I think I'm going to have a RavenShadow icon, because the guy just rocks. From the second volume: "Love what you've done with the place. Early American Blecch, if I'm not mistaken."
winter: (Tori Amos and a Delta Goodrem quote)
Consulting with my female friends in a last-minute brainstorm before the ball, I came to the conclusion that I am the only one who's coordinating her body lotion's scent with her perfume. To my defense, my perfume will be Samsara by Guerlain, the scent equivalent of a medieval siege engine.

(My new body lotion is buttermilk-scented, if you were wondering.)

The epistolary Seishirou/Subaru fic is going well - I wrote four letters today, two from each. As soon as I think of a title, I can post the first part.

Anybody got an idea for a title? Letters, canon X-timeline, romance/sap, saying in writing what they wouldn't say out loud...

ExpandExcerpt from Seishirou's second letter )

And Subaru just ended his second letter with "Hugs&Kisses". He's being ironic, but still.

How exactly does one go about turning in one's goodfic-writer card?

[ETA] The woman from the writing implements shop called to say that they got my fountain pen back from Switzerland. She didn't say if it was fixed or not... *trembles* Want my pen back!

And after the earlier wibble about paid accounts, I've just gone and spent half the yearly fee for a paid account on a ticket to a ball. Going stag, but hey, it's my college halfway-ball. Tradiiiition. And I've got a show-stopper dress - think Arwen in black tulle and gold, flowing and winged and magical - so maybe some other girl will find herself without a partner before the night is through.

And, of course, I'm writing. More snippets:

[Sands] only slept when he was too tired to lie awake, and that took longer and longer. Instead he sank into spells of vertigo, stretches of time where he took great care to place one foot in front of the other. His greatest balancing act of all, death on one side and madness on the other.
- from "Insomnia", a "Back in the Fold" vignette

His forearm is now across my legs. He's tactile, like all of his branch of the family. You might not expect it, but they are: from Ambarussa's habit of curling up to anyone who can serve as a head-rest (and I can assure you, even one Feanorian redhead leaning on you is damn heavy) to Caranthir's habit of pinning you to a wall when he wants to drive his point home. I remember that when I see Feanor all but wrapped around Nerdanel in press photos from art exhibitions.
She had her latest show in London, and afterwards we danced on Tower Bridge at three in the morning.

- from the modern Quendi fic, Fingon POV

Also, have started epistolary thingie featuring Subaru and Seishirou. It's also incredibly mushy and sappy, which is all the fault of [livejournal.com profile] nelyafinwe and [livejournal.com profile] findekano, and what they wrote today. I think I might have to turn in my goodfic-writer card.
winter: (Tori Amos and a Delta Goodrem quote)
(Still incoherent. Sorry.)

I'm toying with the idea of a paid account. For vanity reasons only: I want a better layout and more user icons. The problem? That's $25 per year plus $10 for the icons. Fourteen coffees, eight to ten comic books, four paperbacks, twice my average monthly Avon order, one session at the beauty salon, 2/3 of having my hair done. Priorities, priorities.

In other news, my fictives take a perverse pleasure in giving me ideas while I'm trying to bathe. This time it's a strange modern Fingon. I'm not sure it'll go anywhere; I hope it will, because I find modern Quendi a fascinating concept, and I have a lot of little crystal shards of images that I'd like to fit into it.

Thranduil watching Maedhros play pachinko in a parlour in Osaka is one of them.

But so far, it's just Fingon rambling.

Expandwhat Fingon had to say so far )

In other news, teen!Seishirou in Tsubasa? Woo. I so need to get scanlations...
winter: (Agent Sands. Death Incarnate.)
Am trying to write a little something for the Henneth-Annun birthday challenge, but Arwen apparently read [livejournal.com profile] tehta's recent fear-of-writer's-block and decided it'd be neat to channel it, multiplied by ten or so. Galadriel is at the verge of whopping her upside the head, and I cannot seem to get the mood down from whining about thin metaphors to melancholy leavetakings. And I'm supposed to mention gifts in it, too.

Not touching the recent X thing. Especially since I always tell Sakurazuka and Aoki apart in my fics by unorthodoxly romanizing their first names as Seishirou and Seiichiro.

In other news, [livejournal.com profile] nelyafinwe and [livejournal.com profile] nonebraver (the latter being a puppet of [livejournal.com profile] applegnat's) rock my socks. Even if you've got no idea who Fingon and Maedhros are, the sheer... romance without schmoopiness, right up to the point when you realize you're going into a sugar coma, of their various stories and snippets is breathtaking.

"Loving him was the imperfection that made me whole."

(Yes, I'm a sap, for the right kind of sappiness.)

ETA: Success! Galadriel thing is finished. 1400 words, two days in all. Now, back to my Feanorians and editing the Subaru/Kamui thing.
winter: (Tori Amos and a Delta Goodrem quote)
As I mentioned on the blog, it's time to face the music. Just about everyone on my blogroll has a livejournal now, and I haven't been keeping up with their non-lj musings anyway. So this will now be updated much more frequently as my fandom/whatever notebook, while whimsy and some Real Life stuff will stay in the blog.

Case in point: my big Silmarillion thingie. I've been wibbling about it for a month now. It will possibly be called "Battle Scars" or "No Journey Without Scars".

Just now, the not-quite-main character Taithrenwen (called Taith by everyone who knows Sindarin better than she does) poked me and decided she wants an introduction, and preferably before Celegorm finishes waxing lyrical about the weather in the prologue to the first story in the series, "All Along the Watchtowers". She didn't let me go until 500 words later.

Expandif you want a sneak peek... )</lj-cut

*hiss* *spit*

*gouges out someone's eyeballs for the hell of it*

Grr. Bloody twisted, uncooperative anime fictives.

Anybody on the f-list feel up to taking a critical look at a short X/1999 post-series piece sometime after the weekend? One with an S/K lemon in it?

(And now off to write said lemon. That's one thing I can't do in a lecture hall, with a guy on either side looking over my shoulder...)

ETA: S and K being uncooperative again. But I don't care, because... You know how sometimes you get a piece of feedback that's both positive and intelligent that you know someone smart really liked your writing? That's a feeling that can't be beaten. That quiet little squee from the depths of my heart.
winter: (Agent Sands. Death Incarnate.)
Teen!Boromir, kindly unhand Maglor. The poor thing's in no state for a relationship of any kind, nevermind the paedophilia angle.

Curufin, let Sands out of the closet. I don't care what he said about your Cunning Plan (TM).

Sands, stop waving that gun around. I mean it.

Subaru, don't glare at me like that. I solemnly swear I'll write you the Kamui-molestation fic as soon as I re-read X. Promise.

Fëanor, get out of my head. Wait, let me rephrase that. Beth, stop channeling Fëanor. Now.

Thank you.

In other news, LOTR-fic and "On the lips and hearts of children" (OUATIM, next installment of "Back in the fold" series) are both finished in first draft. Still some editing to do, but things are going well. Finally.

Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] permetaform!

And happy St Paddy's day, y'all.

Me, I'm bummed out after a fashion show (as well as stuffed full of yakitori and spinach lasagna; this reporter gig has some serious perks), but I did write another ~500 words today. Still of the LOTR/Silmarillion fic with kid!Gondorians running into Maglor. Thirteen year old Boromir has Issues.
