I thought Gabriel was played by Emma Thompson... ooops, turns out it was Tilda Swinton. :)

Either way I like the character and thought that it was interesting that Gabriel only dropped 1 notch rather than 2...

I think that was because of the good intentions ;) I think Gabriel was my favorite part about the movie - the one thing they managed to make honestly cooler than the comicbook version. (Lucifer's a runner up, but only if they had kept him as First of the Fallen, not Lucy-dear...)

Hellblazer. Get thee to a comic shop, because it's a complete classic. Most of the movie's plot is based on Dangerous Habits, the first six issues of Garth Ennis' run on the book. I find Ennis not so good later in his run - though he doesn't degenerate into the violence extravaganza of Preacher or Pilgrim - but the final issues, A Rake at the Gates of Hell, pack a lot of punch.

A lot of the industry's greats have written Hellblazer in their day - the character was created by Alan Moore for Swamp Thing, Jamie Delano started off the monthly title (Original Sins, the first of his run, practically defines John Constantine), there was also Warren Ellis and Brian Azzarello. Currently it's being written by Mike Carey, same guy that writes Lucifer (which is also an "OMG buy now run don't walk" book in my opinion, especially the first miniseries "Lucifer: The Morningstar Option").

And if you want samples, someone happens to have almost all of it scanned ;) Might come in handy since "The Morningstar Option" seems to be out of print right now...

Through very patient searching ;) I actually hit on it while googling Tilda Swinton herself, since it was on her fansite. I can't wait for the DVD and screencaps - for the moment this one's all I found except for the one in the club where se's telling Constantine he's fucked.
