Musing on writing, plus meme
Sep. 9th, 2007 06:49 pmI've been writing fanfic sporadically at best over the past year or so, but that doesn't mean I haven't been writing. Several original projects are circling at the edge of my consciousness; Roses for Lucifer are threatening to blossom into something even bigger; and of course there is the cowritten soap opera that I promise will be available for consumption. Soon. I've got it all saved until mid-July, all 400 scenes of it!
In the meantime, meme - and even though I haven't posted anything with them yet, I'd love if someone asked about POTC characters. I may have signed up for a ficathon, and this time no Project From Hell on the horizon to interfere with it :)
Name a character that you know I write or have written (or roleplay or have roleplayed), and I’ll tell you:
a. What initially prompted me to like the character enough to write about him/her
b. One of his/her best traits
c. One of his/her worst traits
d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character
e. The story/chapter/paragraph/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character
f. My plans (if any) to write the character in the near future

The first Rudolf I saw was Fritz Schmidt, and it left me completely indifferent to the character, in his interpretation a completely apathetic emo-disaster. I was much more impressed by Youka Wao's idealistic young poet, but it was clips of Jesper Tydén, with both a quiet strength and a desperate crush on Death, that sealed it for me. Even then, it took writing a story or two before I truly understood Rudolf's nuances.
b. One of his/her best traits
Definitely his idealism. He believes the best of people and thinks that if somebody makes an effort, they have to succeed. This inner, inherent goodness is both his best side and his folly.
c. One of his/her worst traits
The fact that the one person he doesn't believe in is himself. He can summon a fatal royal mien that stands for confidence, but he's not a commander in his own right. In a way, he remained a lost child searching for his nurse.
(Strangely enough, where I disagree with some of his mother's selfish choices, he was a proper Habsburg when it mattered; his only truly selfish choice was his last one, and even that is understandable.)
d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character
I keep wondering if it's because he's so different from me that his narrative just flows. He's got a gift for vivid imagery and a surprising sensuality to the way he perceives the world - touch especially often overpowers sight. It makes for a distinct narrative voice, and it's a pleasure to write him.
e. The story/chapter/paragraph/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character
It's hard to pinpoint, but I have to admit to a fondness for the character study that is Wanting. I think I managed to hit on exactly why Rudolf cannot be a hero in his own right.
f. My plans (if any) to write the character in the near future
There's that short story/novelette I'm sketching, though that doesn't have his own voice. I'm also considering several original ideas based on his character, though with changed details: the idealistic prince is a powerful idea. A current outline has him paired - not necessarily in the sexual or romantic sense - with a fey warrior based, tentatively, on how I think Máté Kamarás would play von Krolock. No Elisabeth plans at the moment, but that's subject to change.

Date: 2007-09-09 07:25 pm (UTC)Yes, he's definitely crushing on Death. (But who doesn't?)
As far as "Die Schatten Werden Langer" goes, I prefer the German lyrics and the Takarazuka choreography. After watching a clip on YouTube a few times, it becomes so clear that he's fated to have a bad end, and nothing can stop it.

Date: 2007-09-11 12:00 pm (UTC)Than:
a. What initially prompted me to like the character enough to write about him/her
That, I believe, would be one Maki Ichiro. And Vlad Draculea's reaction to hir legs. Then se started talking about hir origins and hasn't shut up since.
b. One of his/her best traits
...se has good ones? Probably diligence, and honour.
c. One of his/her worst traits
The list is a mile long, but the tendency to read three times too much into any word or action tops it.
d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character
Se. Won't. Shut. Up.
e. The story/chapter/paragraph/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character
Probably the Tara storyline, the scenes with Amidio, Tara and Ildri where what se did to keep Tara alive is revealed. Especially the Ildri scene, because that's what Than is - obsessive and dutiful enough to feel that punishment should not be avoided if se transgressed against the Death laws, even if it means hir own end.
f. My plans (if any) to write the character in the near future
*GLARES*
Also, finish up hir and Vlad's love story.

Date: 2007-09-11 12:14 pm (UTC)a. What initially prompted me to like the character enough to write about him/her
Epiales. He needed someone to take care of him, or rather to step on him, and then the stepper-on looked up at Than and facepalmed.
b. One of his/her best traits
Caring. It's a more personal thing than Than's obsession on duty: he cares personally, big-brother-like.
c. One of his/her worst traits
Being deathly afraid of saying things out loud when they concern feelings. It took him over two millennia to tell Than he loves hir, and Arin is still waiting.
d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character
Sometimes he just flows, especially with Amidio and Epiales, often also with Than. But when his emotions go into play - oy vey. That's why I'm lucky there's Epiales around, because just like with Than's angels, he steps in to express the feelings Hypnos can't.
e. The story/chapter/paragraph/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character
I have to say I keep going back to the first story, when Than calls on him after finding Azrael. It's him, dutiful and caring and afraid for his strong and fragile brother-sister.
f. My plans (if any) to write the character in the near future
I'll probably have to write his first meeting with Vlad fairly soon ~_~
