Well, this is bloody brilliant

As if the winter harddrive trouble weren't enough, on Saturday I managed to catch a virus on my home computer. Easy enough to get rid of - except for the fact that the bloody thing was so badly written, it managed to corrupt the partition table of all things. Looks like my only option is complete data backup, reformat and reinstall; I'm waiting to find out whether it'll be possible to accomplish free of charge or if I'll have to shell out for a commercial service.

So until further notice, no access to most of my graphics, software, or audio collection :/ I've got a backup of the fics etc, thankfully, but that's it.

I want better technical karma. And health-wise, because this would be easier to take if I were not tripping over my own feet.

I had AdAware and TrendMicro antivirus, though a leetle behind on the updates for the latter. Now I think I'll switch to Grisoft's AVG, which offered actually to clean the virus and probably would have done the trick if not for the silly trojan being a hacked-together piece of excrement :/

Good luck with all the backup. Though I still don't see how a silly trojan could mess up the hard disk partition... but with these idiots, you never know.

Ad-Aware and AVG are love! *nod nod* It's what I use; well that and the default WinXP SP2 firewall. I haven't had too many problems so far.

The one good thing will be that I'll ask for Service Pack 2 this time :> Which means I will be able to burn DVDs on the home computer and *gasp* back up data on them :P

Another option: external hard disks aren't that expensive and are reusable. I have a 120Gb disk the size of a small Moleskine for keeping my yaoi pornbackups.

*eyedart* I think I might consider an internal one - cheaper and I have a 3.5" box for it already, from my CD burner that I won't need once I get the DVD one installed :)
