Some people think gay people should stay out of politics

Let's just say that all my muses hold the author in equal contempt, including historical!Dracula (not to be confused with historical!Roxula), who's as homophobic as they come, but still agrees that the bisexual sultan Mehmed II was a kickass war leader.

Meme ganked from [livejournal.com profile] shezan:

Name a CD you own that you think no-one else on your friendslist does:
Polish ones wouldn't be fair, so... HIM, Greatest Love Songs vol. 666. Mmm, love metal covers of pop hits :D

Name a book you own that you think no-one else on your friendslist does:
Erberto Petoia, "Werewolves and Vampires". A lovely resource on Balkan folklore, but I think it was ever only published in Italian and Polish.

Name a movie you own on DVD/VHS/whatever that you think no-one else on your friendslist does:
Kindred: The Embraced was a TV show, but I do have the DVD.

Name a place that you have visited that you think no-one else on your friendslist has:
Wetlina in the Bieszczady mountains? *looks at the Polish portion of the f-list*

Name a piece of technology or any sort of tool you own that you think no-one else on your friendslist has:
No idea, actually. I'm probably the only person with a Caran d'Ache fountain pen...

I boggle on the writer of that article. I honestly can not understand bigorty like that. Picking out a sofa is a big decision in his eyes? What about the rest of their life-choices? And bisexuality is for teenagers? Bah! Silly, silly man.

while i remember www.dagonbytes.com it has all the public domain information on werewolves and vampires by Montague Summers. I read it in work but they're not very long if you wanted to print them off, but they are like THE reference apparently for vampires, hence Buffy is Buffy Summers.
the page is cheesy but has a lot of good info on it.

I'd just like to appologise for my incredibly stupid countryfolk.

I have gay friends whose biggest headache is whether to have a black sofa or a cream one.</>

Oh God. South Wales has the lowest out gay population in the UK. Is anyone suprised?

Can you explain your coutryman's logic? His point seems to be that gay men are disqualified from politics because they do not have children, and yet 1) many gay(ish) politicians are married, often with children and 2) there do, in fact, exist straight childless people in this world. Also, quite a lot of childless people of every orientation have these other people called 'friends and relatives' who are close enough to them to discuss things other than sofas, and who often have children.

I've been to Bieszczady a few times (my parents are really into camping, and I like it as well) but I have no idea which towns I visited.

I'd also like to know the exact mechanism through which your IQ rises with each baby you give birth to...

I cannot explain my compatriot's logic. I gave up after the "anyone who says they are bisexual is a liar" comment. (Because I believe almost the reverse is true.)

Her (Lowri is a girl's name) assertation that only people with children engage with public services, therefore only those who have managed to spawn are fit for public life is blatantly on crack. I mean to borrow a completely cliched return argument - well in the 80's and 1990's due to the HIV eperdemic a hell of a lot of gay men suddenly found themselves or their partners relying on the NHS and social services. Funding for poly-drug treatment and pallitive care for the terminally ill becme big issues for the gay community.

Also she seems to assume that only men are homosexual, or at least only men should aspire to such important positions that their sexuality matters.

Why she feels that way - the Welsh valleys were a hell culture based on the almost comlete segregation of the sexes, presbyterian chapels offering judgement and hellfire and rampant homophobia. She probably grew up thinking her views were normal and commonsense, much like an 1860's southern belle would assume logic dictated her African slaves were sub human.

I would, of course, agree. Only I do believe that there are some people whose gender-preference dial is turned almost all the way to one side or the other: at least, lots of people seem to have had some kind of special moment in their adolescence when they realized that they fancy gender X.

in the 80's and 1990's due to the HIV eperdemic a hell of a lot of gay men suddenly found themselves or their partners relying on the NHS and social services.

But they were relying on the 'pervert' branches of these bodies, which are not so important, whereas people with kids rely on the wholesome branches that must be cultivated by politicians...

Anyway... I sort of understand why someone would have views that are more or less homophobic, and think them logical. But the "having children" argument is just beyond idiotic. No step in it makes sense.

Ah but Lowri writes for the Daily Mail, which is (apparently) the newspaper most read by women. It specialised in diet tips, anti-imigrant diatribes and scare articles on how working for a living will render you a suicidal infertile single by the time your 32. There was once a famous opinion piece stating that women were so wonderful and designed to have babies in the most adverse of conditions, government sending on maternity wards was a waste of taxpayers pounds.

You have to be really thick to fall for it - but apparently a lot of women do. The holy, shining grail of motherhood as the only worthwhile path to be trodden is a major tennet of rightwing brainwashing PR.

Incidentally, her love for her children did not prevent her from saddling them with the names Merlin and Griffin.

Okay then, I did not realize this came from the idiot papers. That explains much.

Poor things. Well, I hope this makes them stronger, like it did that boy called Sue.
