winterInstead of a farewell, Milan gave me rain. And not just rain, but the grandmother of all downpours: 5 hours of the sky falling down, and that was only until my flight left. For all I know, it might be raining still.
My feet may hurt, but I've done a condensed tour of all the sights. Some notes thereon:
- Count Dooku was very amused to find his bust on display in the Sforza Castle. Me, I'm betting it's some ancestor of Christopher Lee.
- I kept thinking that Milan's the only city with worse trams than Warsaw. Then I blinked and wondered if I got teleported to Dublin. I kid you not - I was almost run over by the Luas, same colours and everything!
- A little-known, judging by the number of visitors, but well worth visiting sight is the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana. It's basically a library with a bric-a-brac exposition. Some general religious porn (Judith, Sebastian, Mary Magdalene... you know the drill), and then a Da Vinci. Or a whole wall of Rafael's sketches. Or a room or two of Breughel. Or three cabinets of a mish-mash of miniatures. Not to mention Napoleon's Waterloo gloves and Lucretia Borgia's hair. Most charming place I've ever seen.
- The Duomo might have been wrapped up in scaffoldings, but the inside more than made up for it. If you've been to the Notre Dame de Paris, imagine five of these. And three times as high. Rows upon rows of columns, each thick enough that it'd take six men to wrap their arms around it. It's a set from Lynch's Dune, a fantasy novel come to life.
