[personal profile] winter
Meme swiped from [livejournal.com profile] reynardine and [livejournal.com profile] rkold . I'm not doing the travel destinations part because it's very US-heavy and I've only ever been to Minneapolis/St Paul.

My best trip ever...
Japan 2009 is a strong contender, as is London 2000. Both were total immersion trips, thrown head-first into a new place and culture.

My worst trip ever...
I think Ireland has to be it, though at three months it was rather long-term. My health went to pieces and at the same time, I was at the absolutely worst emotional place I'd ever been.

Most important thing I ever lost on a trip...
My Walkman, back in 1994 or so, at a zoo in the Czech republic.

Most important thing I ever forgot to take on a trip...
Towels, Japan 2009 - I forgot them <I>twice</i> ;) I'm generally well-prepared otherwise.

Thing I miss most when I'm away...
Bread and cats.

Thing I miss least when I'm away...
Work. Definitely work.

Favorite travel partner...
<lj user=fyrie> &hearts; Even if she likes the room far colder than I do, it's just a question of moar blankets.

Place I hope to travel to someday...
St Petersburg heads the list at the moment. I'd also love to get back to Paris.

What's your first travel memory?
Stumbling out of a coach at the Place de Concorde, with 39-degree fever and wonder in my eyes. I was 9, and I'd just got my passport.

Name one place that you traveled to as a kid and returned to as an adult.
Vienna - it was even more fun the second and third time around.

Was it weird?
Not really. I had fun finding our old places.

How do you sleep on airplanes: booze, drugs or au natural?
I generally don't. It's even worse on the bus, though for some reason not on trains.

Name one thing you think every traveler should see before they die.
Duomo di Milano. Its vastness is transcendent.

Where have you been that you would not recommend to others?
Minneapolis. Not really anything to see there, except a few good bookshops.

Name one non-travel thing you learned on a trip.
That if you eat grass, you will not get fat <- learned from an ojisan in Kyoto

Do you play any games when you travel, like counting convertibles or mullets?
In Rome, we counted Smart cars. There were hundreds of them.

What's an awesome idea for a theme park that no one has thought up?
Drama Musicals park. "Ride the Phantom boat!"

Name the coolest animal you've seen in the wild and tell why you loved it.
I think that honour has to go to various cranes I saw in Japan. They look 100% plastic until they fly away.

If you could go to Bora Bora with anyone, who would it be?
On my own. I'm getting to the point where a holiday on my own, somewhere quiet, would be nice.

What's the weirdest thing you've eaten on your travels?
I tend to steer away from the exceedingly strange food.

Yellowstone or Yosemite?
Yosemite.

What country do you think has the best traditional fashion?
India.

Name one place in the USA you've never been to but want to see.
The House on the Rock.

Road trips: Love or hate?
Hate, because I get motion-sick. I think it'll be different if I'm driving.

Do you or have you ever lived abroad?
Six months in France and three in Ireland. I'd much rather go back to France.

Do you sleep in when traveling, or get up at the crack of dawn?
Crack of dawn every. Single. Time.

Name three things you hate about being away from home.
Lack of a good bathtub. Lack of cats. The need to speak a language other than my own all the time.

Name three things you love about travel.
The ability to stop and look, to notice the dew on the flowers and the cracks in the wood. Strange foods in supermarkets. History in the flesh.
