Thank you for the link. I saw most of the pictures before, but they never lose their impact. So horrifying and so very sad.

It rained the whole time we were in Hiroshima. The starkness of the Peace Park was all the greater.

It helps, a bit, to see what lush greenery grows there now. They managed something wonderful with the Peace Park, a lasting memento that touches without being overwhelming.

I actually always wondered about whether or not anything could grow there. I always sort of assumed it was too radiated for it for a long, long time.

The park was up and running by 1954, so I would think the effects weren't that severe. There was a great typhoon a month after the bombing, flooding all of the area (it's in the nook between two branches of a river) and that, I think, helped wash away the contaminated soil.

The cranes helped. There were thousands of thousands of them, by each monument.

We didn't go into the Peace Museum because we weren't sure we could take it. Two girls we met at the hostel said it was completely shocking.
