It helps, a bit, to see what lush greenery grows there now. They managed something wonderful with the Peace Park, a lasting memento that touches without being overwhelming.
The park was up and running by 1954, so I would think the effects weren't that severe. There was a great typhoon a month after the bombing, flooding all of the area (it's in the nook between two branches of a river) and that, I think, helped wash away the contaminated soil.
