I do agree with most of your assessment; it's spot on. However, I do think he realized how Qui-Gon's death impacted him. He spends his whole life trying to live up to Qui-Gon, following Qui-Gon's dying wish, etc. Most of the time, I think he thinks his own way of doing things is better, but right around RotS, it dawns on him that maybe Qui-Gon was right along.
