I first wandered into St Michael's church at night, after that evening's entertainment didn't pan out (internet information is not always reliable). The first half of these photos were shot in a dark church at 8PM, alone except for my mother and faint choral music coming from somewhere, the faintest light bringing angels to life.

Magic.

I wasn't able to get clear shots of the amazing sculptures over the altar though, so I had to come back the next day. Almost as pretty by light :)

The light is beautiful. I'm not a religious person, but the first time I walked into a cathedral filled with candlelight, even I was prepared to admit it was magical.

Thanks for sharing your photos.

Lovely photos, thank you for sharing them! I love Michaelerkirche. When I still lived in Vienna I often sat alone in the church before I went to theatre, and once I even managed to hear some choir rehearsing there... *happy sigh*

Baroque churches tend to be too full of everything for my taste, but for some reason the Viennese ones were really beautiful. Michaelerkirche was nearly perfect, especially the altarpiece, and it was more quiet and peaceful than Stephansdom. (Though I adore Stephansdom as well. *church addict*) I'm still a bit bitter that I never went to Augustinerkirche, there was always a mass going on or something when I wanted to.
