winter: (Equilibrium)
There was more snow again this morning, and it seems that the snowfall has finally beaten the city services, the trams and buses and even Ms G who's the building superintendent (is that the word?) and usually keeps the little winding streets around the building spotlessly clean, without even ice to trip you up. Walking towards the metro, the ghost-city's single beating artery, I slid and stumbled even in combat boots. I spread my arms out to steady myself, and a flash-frozen car antenna sliced the side of my palm. Perfect round single red circles on the snow and the ice.

There was a frozen pigeon on the overhang above the entrance to the metro, its eyes empty and hollow. I knocked three times on the concrete slab blocking the entryway. It slid to the side; it was built as a nuclear shelter.

A woman was handing out hot drinks on the train platform. I didn't take any; it hurts less when you go out. I am an adaptable creature, and it's easier every day.

The library at the college was closed, the doors taped up. Someone had thrown a snowball at the window, old enough to know better, and in the cold all the metal holding the glass shattered. The gigantic reading room stood open to the wind. I took a piece of glass and slid through the tape. The book I wanted was on a shelf in the reading room, so I did not have to descend into the underground vaults, did not have to get needlessly warm.

It's colder now than it was this morning.
