Just sticking this up for my own later reference:

A story, I decided, is anything that keeps the people reading turning the pages, and doesn't leave them feeling cheated at the end. Everything else was up for grabs.

Someday, I'll write the multi-layered normal/paranormal/supernatural universe that's sitting around my harddrive in fragments and shards. And the mild-mannered vampire storyteller called Neil will be a major character.

If Neil didn't exist, someone would have to invent him.
