The issue that disturbs me the most about online fandom is how any female – even a canon one – is immediately in danger of the Mary Sue taint.
I agree, but with a caveat: there are several female characters, particularly in shounen series, that lend themselves towards Mary Sueishness. I'm thinking of Relena Darlian Peacecraft, who is blond, popular, and is the queen of the WORLD. It doesn't take much for her to become completely insufferable. And while they don't fit the perfection aspect of the Mary Sue, there's an entire type of female characters within the sports shounen genre that are so nails-on-slate annoying that its easy for them to become full-blown Mary Sues in fic.
