When fandoms collide

Jim Steinman is doing a Batman musical :D At least he's the right person for it musically - that's exactly the vibe a Batman musical should take, operatic and heroic rock with just the right amount of camp. Here's hoping they get good people for it.

And in his blog, he mentions plans for a film of Tanz that's "up to Polanski". OMGgahgibbleYAY. I do have Tanz on DVD (original Vienna cast), but a true movie, with effects and everything, and hmm, didn't Polanski say that Malwina was his perfect Sarah and rave all over Lukasz's voice? :>

(On the employment front, I got the contract today :D And I'm justified in complaining about the heat: it's the hottest July in recorded history. But I think I'm getting used to the temperatures now.)

Another film? Well, it would only be logical - the old one is freakingly hilarious but... not so good. *sweatdrops*

This, I think, would be a film of the musical :> It might also mean one done in English for global appeal, which would *gasp* mean a Polanski-supervised English version of Tanz...

I hear Polanski's quite nice to work with. Or at least that's what people said when he was shooting in Romania.

But yay, musical in English would be so much better than the old movie! Hopefully they'll keep the title and dump the old one, because really, the size and hilarity of that title will haunt me forever. And also hopefully, they will retranslate the lyrics rather than use the old English ones which, I am told, were truly horrendous.

Quite apart from him as a person, I utterly admire his directing skills. What he did with the musical is amazing in the way the action never lags, the audience's attention is held and every character gets enough of a part to be memorable. If it's really in his hands, I trust the magic will be there :)

And don't get me wrong about the movie. As stupid and hilarious as it is, I do like it. I have the feeling it was meant to be that way, after all.

The movie situation was similar to Tanz on Broadway - producers cut it up to up the slapstick quotient because they thought people wouldn't understand it. I know it's a long way from proposal to movie, but still... hee :D

*deep sigh* It's because they made it in the US. If they shoot in in Europe, as a co-production at least, they'll probably have no such problems. And we all know how Polanski feels about Hollywood nowadays. So there is hope. And he can probably shoot it in Transylvania or somewhere hearaabouts. We won't mind, we welcome his strange genius anytime! *eg*

It's not as if Polanski's allowed in the US anyway, so it'd be Europe by default. And oh, it would be pretty. Plus a challenge for him, since I think he hasn't done a musical movie yet...

I'm afraid you'll have to, because until then, I'm working like a mad fiend :S I have one day off when I get back from Sweden and for almost 2 weeks after that, I'm working almost every day.

Were we just going to go with the staircase motif down the side or do you just want to take it and run with it?

I'm thinking shades of grey with a sketch-staircase in white on dark grey down one side and something mildly crazy for the menu (woven through the staircase) - maybe a bloodspot-font. Stylish, goth and campy, just like Tanz ;) Light grey text-background, maybe some scattered show photos and DVD screencaps throughout (no more than 1-2 on one page). Simple-ish.

Sounds good :D Don't want to get burdened down by the cliche of black, white and red, really. Plus, its a pain in the nexck to read anything when its like that.

Translations and lyrics? Because I know a lot of people have a heck of a time trying to find the lyrics online. Do we want to go the forum-route? With scary fangirls popping up all over?

With work and whatnot, I certainly won't be up to the challenge of modding a forum, plus I haven't found one forum engine I like yet. Maybe an LJ community. But good point with the lyrics, and my English translations :P

But of course! The biting thing combined with the ineffectual penetration of the mortals will be oh such fun to analyse. Especially with the Professor being unable to even maintain a hold of his penetrating weapon. It's disarmed by Rebecca and when Alfred has one, it's ineffectual as well :D

Now I'm wondering about their further use of phallic weapons such as the umbrella (effective because of the element of surprise) and the candlesticks (ineffectual until used in a non-penetrative way) ;) And oh - dibs on the symbolism of dreams :D

You got it - dreams are beyond my capabilities. The weapons element would be fun to look at too - the stakes and garlic and everything prove completely useless, yet simple things like candlesticks and umbrellas serve as effective weapons.

Yep. Dibs on the comparisons, because really it's all rife with them. Abronsius' ineffectualness as compared to van Helsing's, Sarah as an amalgam of Lucy and Mina (tying into the feminist interpretation again, "virgin" and "whore" in one), Jonathan vs Alfred, silly Vlad vs crafty VK...

And Herbert as so much better than the brides :D

Though seriously. Draculea's only companions are his harem, kept around for sexxing purposes. VK actually keeps his son around - implying a capability for familial attachment, paternal love and friendship. The parallel may be extended to the brides' assault of Jonathan vs Herbert and Alfred, and then at the end, with Herbert being vigilant and finding out the mortals vs the brides dying in their coffins...
