Dear brain, you are weird

I stayed up until 3AM today, reading a rather neat book about tragic Napoleonic soldiers, one of whom has a nervous breakdown and attempts suicide via challenging the other to a duel and shooting to the side. For some reason, this doesn't work, but the commander decides that Soldier 1 is a disgrace and should be killed, and then Soldiers 1&2 run away and go home. In the middle of Russian winter. Lots of sublimated homoerotic desire complete with erotic dreams about impaling, but then the author wussed out and had Soldier 1 die of consumption, leaving Soldier 2 to boink Soldier 1's sister. Drat.

And then for some reason I had a nightmare that I was somewhere in the city centre, very hungry, but whenever I came into any establishment that was serving salad, it was just closing down, and all the other places only sold burgers and chips, which my diet doesn't allow me to eat.

The diet may be influencing my brain a little.

EDIT: Female Parental Unit has her nose buried in Coldfire and loudly declared that Gerald is a bastard after reading the prologue, but since she now got to the bit where Gerald and Damien meet, I think her opinion of my favourite immortal vampire sorcerer may be changing soon >:)

You can't just write a book description like that and leave out the title!

[identity profile] myblackass.livejournal.com 2006-02-19 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, such sad news! Thanks for the title, maybe someone will translate it into French one day...

I know people who stopped reading after the prologue, so your mother's reaction isn't that bad. ;-)

Ah, the Napoleonic era :D Always fun ;)

[identity profile] mariem-1.livejournal.com 2006-02-19 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
My mother adores Gerald and the prologue never was a problem to her. I guess we both are that evil.

[identity profile] mariem-1.livejournal.com 2006-02-20 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
I can stand cruelty to animals too, especially because I witnessed it. For example, 3 different people acquainted with my mother or her friends killed their cats because they were tired of them. *shrugs*

[identity profile] mariem-1.livejournal.com 2006-02-20 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Argh, I meant "I can't stand it too". I have 2 cats myself, so...

[identity profile] mariem-1.livejournal.com 2006-02-20 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Your cats are pretty. I have a blue cream Persian one and a tabby-and-white Siberian one. Unfortunately, I don't have good photos of them. *sigh*

Argh, stories that wimp out make me crazy, especially if I've slogged through many pages to the end. Alas, homophobia is alive and well and the author may have thought he his book would not be published if he had gone for the 'gay' ending?

Hee, posted new SW fanfic late last night/early this morning. Anakin's unicorn returns to talk to the Sith Lord. Your white dragon story got my muse awake. :D

"They caught a chill. [Soldier 2] was in bed for four days. [Soldier 1] died after two days."

AAAAUGH! That was the ending of their relationship??? Death to hack authors!!! RRRrrrgh.

Saw that one - the image of Vader trying to reason with a unicorn is rather mind-boggling :)

Well, Vader, or rather Anakin, knows this unicorn - it gave him a ride when he was just a young padawan during the clone wars, much to Obi-Wan's horror. There's a whole mythos about the Kerynn that Obi-Wan knows but didn't think (or have time) to tell his student. Even in Vader's messed-up state, Obi-Wan would still be getting grey hair to know about this new meeting. That short story is archived here:

Are you familiar with the Hayao Miyazaki movie "Mononoke Hime" (Princess Mononoke)? There was a mystical beast in that story called the Shinigami. Among other things, it had the power of life and death and could pull the soul out of a dying creature and give it a peaceful death. *That's* the sort of legend that surrounds the Kerynn in Anakin's universe. The truth is much stranger. :D

Missing Japanese class would be 'taihen da!' Enjoy - I studied the language for some years and got up to being able to read about 250 or more kanji. Still not enough to be literate, alas. But I know how to buy a train ticket and ask directions. :)

It *is* fun playing with that image. Posted the new chapter, and the horse with the horn has a bit more to show Lord Vader. :D

edited since I can't spell 'horn' this morning. Sheesh.

*is snooping through otehr people's journals*

What was the name of the Napoleonic soldiers book? *curious*

Hey, my ex-boyfriend read the Coldfire books and liked them. (Then again, he is a bit weird, just like I am.) So if rocker computer geeks can like Coldfire, so can parental units. And I bet that, by the end of CoS, she'll love Gerald. Or Damien. Or both. *smirk*

maybe I should make it official and friend you, though...

A pity - though I might actually get lucky and find a Romanian copy in an antique book store, you never know. I'll look for it. *writes down author and title*

The prologue is different from the rest of the book, I agree. It's the same in WTNF, and to a certain extent in CoS. It's the kind of flashback writing we get throughout the interlude chapters. Still, I'm not sorry I kept on reading after the prologue. Not sorry at all. *evil smirk*
Karril, eh? Well... *snickers*

BTW, your beta will be ready tomorrow. And I finally remembered what fic I had read from you. It wasn;t SW - it was the HP Sirius/Remus set right after OotP, with the long flashback scenes. Loved that one, though I'm no major HP fan. ^_^

Why thank you. *blushes* My icons are mostly self-made, since I like "clear" bases.

Okay, so no old translations. *sigh* In taht case, chances diminish by quite a lot. But I'll see if there are any translated copies on IRC, or something. Even in French, which I know moderately well. Sadly I speak no Polish.

Yup, loved shards. ♥ As I said, I'm not big on HP and thus don't read lots of fanfic, but Sirius/Remus are definitely my favourite pairing. As for Gerald/Damien, we'll just have to see how their dinamic evolves, won't we? *snicker*

I just happen to hate most of the modern tendencies in icons. They make the actual character/person featured quite... out of focus, at times. Adding some colour to b&w icons is ok, but all the scratches, cramped text and stuff... *shivers*

Get Gerald to shut up? And you expect to actually accomplish that? Gerald is a heady drug, alas. I've refrained myself from writing him so far, and still I feed people plot bunnies constantly.

Which reminds me...

Well, off to watch what they'll air of the Dance competition! I'm cheering for the Italians and Bulgarians tonight!

Don;t remind me... >_< (More samples of my icons can be found on my site, if you're interested.)
In other news, I have added you to my messengers list. I don't usually stalk people, but it never hurts to have a comprehensive contacts list - just in case. I hope you don't mind.

*lol* Don't get me started on my original boys (and occasional girl)! The list is daunting, even for my dear leather-loving muse. And there's lots of hair involved, besides the occasional wings. *has a hair fetish*

Hey, no killing the bunny! Unless you're planning to have a stew (in which case I can donate some more, to make it tastier).

Well I'm deeply rooted in fantasy and that's the direction most of my boys took. Though I do have my vampires as well. *pointy-teethy smirk* One never forgets one's origins, and my first "serious" writing attempts were in the Vampire Chronicles fandom.

Heh. I understand the urge, trust me. sadly, vampire bunnies being... well, undead, can be pestering and come back for more just when you thought you'd gotten rid of them.
