Still a while to go here, but at least I get rid of the pesky walking plot device

(Muahahaha :D)

“Otto. You seem to be in difficulty.” Vlad Draculea spoke in German, but the words were soft and carefully formed with a melodious Romanian accent, the R sound of Schwierigkeiten cutting sharply through the air. His fingers moved lazily on Herbert’s shoulder, stroking the boy’s tensed muscles.

Herbert wondered if the smell of old blood was just in his imagination.

“Just a human, m’lord.” If anything, the burns made Herbert’s attacker’s speech clearer as he had to enunciate more carefully. “I’ll break his neck for him.”

“You will do nothing of that sort,” the vampire lord purred, amusement barely veiled by the threat in his voice.

“Lord-“

“And if you are so easily defeated, I will reconsider my decision to offer you eternal life. What I have given, I can take away.” Draculea nodded imperiously, clearly dismissing the other vampire.

Otto seemed to waver between snarling and fleeing, but surivival instincts won in the end. Once he was gone, Draculea’s fingers roughly ruffled Herbert’s hair.

“You’ve improved your fighting technique.”

Herbert eyed him warily. He had met the vampire lord several times over the years, as the other’s interest in his father had waxed and waned. Still, he wasn’t sure if he felt safe at the moment – but the thrill wasn’t an unpleasant one.

Green eyes were fixed on the boy’s face. “Pui de lup,” Draculea whispered.
