I had yesterday off, but for once I spent it totally dead. I barely even checked LJ, and I don't remember any of the entries I read, so sorry if I missed something (I've already checked that artaxastra has two chapters of Napoleonic goodness I've yet to read). Hopefully I'm not coming down with anything :S

I'm reading the Coldfire trilogy - I'm three-quarters of the way into the first book and Tarrant is cool. Then again, I expected to like him. I tend to go this way with the über-vamps.

Ancient über-vampire with a love of science, a seriously twisted up sense of honour and a lot of attention paid to appearances? All he's missing is long dark hair to be tailor-made to my taste ;)

Based on your and other recommendations, I ordered the trilogy without checking out anything more, and it's been a good move. I'm just past Senzei's death in Black Sun Rising, and damn if Friedman doesn't know how to write it where it hurts.

(Also, Tarrant and Vryce are far too much like my Dracula and Van Helsing not to like, though it may colour my perception of the relationship somewhat...)

Friedman is really good in conveying human emotions like fear and temptations.

Hmm... their dynamic changes in the next books. I've always thought Dracula had the upper hand in his relationship with Van Helsing. Emotional manipulation and such.

Oh, I don't think we quite understood each other - what I meant was my own version of the relationship during Dracula's lifetime. Especially in the as-yet-unwritten early years, I see it as a parallel - but with Gabriel as Tarrant with all his memories and bitterness and sin, and Vlad as Vryce with all his zeal and self-denial.

Right now she's a bit of a wet hen, but a nice one. Good POV character, since she doesn't express much of her own opinion, but concentrates on experiencing things. And judging by the later fragments you posted, she's going to be quite an object once she matures...
